North Canton, OH: As part of Walsh’s mission to develop leaders in service to others and to honor the legacy of the great servant leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., this coming Monday, January 16, Walsh University students will continue using this day as a day of service to the community. More than 300 hundred students are set to disperse to 13 location sites throughout the area to perform different service activities from sorting and organizing clothes for the homeless to park clean up and grounds keeping to mentoring youth and kids with special needs, organizing books, cleaning, and more.

“This is a great opportunity to not only give back to our community,” said Megan Huston, Director of Culture & Belonging at Walsh University, “but it also provides a very meaningful and rewarding experience for our students to live and honor the life of a fellow servant leader Dr. King who led by example and inspired hope for so many.”

Locations sites include the North Canton Library, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA Canton, Gigi’s Playhouse, SAM Center, Stark Fresh, GentleBrooke, Refuge of Hope and many more. Information about Dr. King’s life and advocacy is being shared throughout campus. Walsh is also sponsoring an essay contest where the winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship for demonstrating how they have exercised grace, dignity, and respect toward others in their community.

For senior, pre-med major and Vice President of the Black Student Union Toni Denmark, the day is especially meaningful.

“This is not only a chance to give back to my community but to do it with my friends one last time in this way.” Denmark said. “I hope we can inspire the next generation of Walsh students to continue this tradition just as Dr. King continues to inspire us.”

While there are no classes on this federal holiday, faculty, staff, students, and community partners are invited to honor Dr. King’s legacy by volunteering to serve our community and reflect on what Dr. King’s dream means today.
