Central Catholic to dedicate new Renee Powell Learning Commons on February 21
Central Catholic first opened it’s doors as Mount Marie Academy in 1905, students today still walk the same hallways as students did in 1905 but don’t let the school’s history and beautiful architecture fool you, as there have been countless renovations to the campus in order to meet student needs. On Wednesday, February 21st, they will dedicate the school’s most recently renovated space, the Renee Powell Learning Commons.
Renee Powell is a distinguished 1964 Central Catholicgraduate, well-known golf professional, and civic rights and social change agent. She was the second African-American woman to compete on the LPDA Tour, playing in more than 250 worldwide golf events. She was part of a USO tour to Vietnam, has been a guest commentator at golf events on both CBS and ABC, and is a member of more than 12 Halls of Fame. She is the LPGA/PGA Head Golf Professional at Clearview Golf Course, the course built by her father. Renee has used her skills to support many causes traveling to Africa to host golf clinics, expanding golf to minorities, women, seniors and military veterans, and launched Clearview HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere).
The dedication of the new student learning commons, in her name will take place Wednesday, February 21st at 5:30 pm, with a blessing by Stark County Catholic Schools President, Fr. Donald King, a brief address by Ms. Powell, and a reception.
The new Learning Commons will feature a student study area, digital conference room, and a state-of-the-art technology lab featuring new computers for student use, a sublimation printer, tumbler press, t-shirt press, and green screen for use by all staff and students.
