When you can fish for free in Ohio this month
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) — Next weekend, anyone age 16 and older can fish for free in Ohio, without a license.
The state’s annual free fishing days this year are Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16, according to a news release from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
“We encourage people to explore Ohio’s great outdoors with different recreational activities,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz is quoted in a news release. “These free fishing days allow anglers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy Ohio’s rivers, lakes and streams together.”
You can find a fishing spot using the HuntFish OH app or on the ODNR website.
For those who don’t usually fish, ODNR has a few tips:
- Keep the trip simple: Consider a person’s age and skill level.
- Start small: Choose a pond, lake or stream where beginners can easily catch a few fish.
- Use live bait: It makes catching a fish easier, and it’s more interesting for children.
- Be patient: It takes time to untangle fishing lines, bait hooks and wait for a bite.
- Take photos: And don’t forget the snacks. Have fun!
