Akron, Ohio – A Little Free Art Gallery will be unveiled at Summit Artspace in Akron on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

Summit Artspace is located at 140 E. Market St. in Downtown Akron.

The project, funded by a 2023 Torchbearers Spark Change Grant, is led by Nicole Hagy. These grants allow members of Torchbearers to bring their ideas to life in the greater Akron community. By focusing on the areas of social justice, sustainability, mental health, addiction, education and youth empowerment and/or arts and culture any member can work towards shaping Akron from their lens.

The Little Free Art Gallery concept is similar to a Little Free Library, but instead of books, it features small pieces of art. This allows for local artists of all ages and abilities to share creations with one another.

The Little Free Art Gallery will be a public forum to showcase the talents of Greater Akron residents and share small artwork pieces with anyone and everyone. This unique project gives all individuals an opportunity to showcase their artwork at no cost to them. It also gives people who love art, who may be on a budget, an opportunity to enjoy beautiful artwork.

The art sharing box is on wheels so it can be moved throughout Summit Artspace. It will be accessible during Summit Artspace’s open days and hours (Fridays from Noon until 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.).

Hagy was inspired after spotting a Little Free Art Gallery which launched in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in April 2021.

Refreshments will be provided. The event will take place from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Summit Artspace. Free parking is available behind the building in the lot off of Summit Street.

Individuals attending the Ribbon Cutting are encouraged to bring a drawing or another type of art to place inside. Suggestions include handmade greeting cards, sketches, painted rocks or beaded jewelry. There will be art supplies at the event for attendees to make a piece of art as well.
