Fishing Events

 

Ranger Bass Tournament

Enjoy time on the water at Deer Creek Reservoir at this Stark Parks Ranger bass boat tournament on July 12th.  Participants can be individual or partnered with a five (5) bass limit: largemouth or smallmouth. Cash only at $60/boat. Registration begins at 6:00 AM with fishing from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM with weigh-in at 3:00 PM. Cash prizes follow with 60% payout. Based on a 30-boat entry: 1st-$450, 2nd-$270, 3rd-$90, and a Big Bass at $270. The remaining proceeds benefit the Stark Parks Ranger Explorer Program, helping the next generation of law enforcement leaders gain the skills, tools, and knowledge to be successful in the field. Night Fishing Derby

Join us on July 18th for the Night Derby at the Sippo Lake Marina for an exciting evening of fishing! Whether you're a seasoned angler or just looking for a fun night outdoors, this event is open to all ages. Registration begins at 5:00 PM with fishing from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. All Ohio laws and regulations apply, with a $5 cash registration fee per person. The marina will be open for bait and snacks throughout the event. Please note: the boat ramp will be closed during this time.

 

Science and Nature

 

Backyard Habitat

Join a representative from Rubber City Reuse on July 10th from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park as they discuss composting and their environmental initiative designed to help individuals and businesses divert organic waste from landfills and turn it into valuable compost for enriching the soil. The program encourages sustainable practices by providing the community with easy access to composting resources and education. This program is part of the Stark Parks backyard certification program. The program is free but registration is required. 

 

Avian Adventure

Bring your binoculars and join a Stark Parks naturalist at Quail Hollow Park on July 26th from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM to look for local bird species and enjoy some fresh air. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or just curious, all skill levels are welcome. The program is free but registration is required. 

 

Music

 

Canton Concert Band

The Canton Concert Band is to perform a variety of instrumental patriotic pieces in celebration of Independence Day on July 2nd at Tam O’Shanter Park. The concert is free. Bring a blanket or chair. Alcohol and snacks are available for purchase. No registration required. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park.

 

Summer Serenades in the Park

This event is supported by The Mary Renkert Wendling Foundation, Friends of Stark Parks, and Rotary Clubs of Stark County. July dates include July 10th at Foltz Community Center in East Canton, July 17th at Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park, and July 24th at Faircrest Park in Canton Township. Dates are Thursday evenings from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM.   

 

Activities

 

Ranger Walks

Join law enforcement rangers for a one-mile guided walk at Fry Family Park on July 2nd from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Rangers will share how they protect wildlife and visitors, and the importance of conservation. The program is free, but registration is required at StarkParks.com. 

 

Paddle Camp

Paddle Camp combines kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and camp games for an unforgettable summer experience. Campers will begin on land to learn the basics of paddling, trip planning, and water safety. Lunch, water, and proper clothing are required for participation. Further information will be provided upon registration.  The program is for 9 – 12 years of age on July 8th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Deer Creek Reservoir.  In-county fee is $15.00 and out-of-county is $20.00. 

Stewart Manor House Tour

Journey back in time while touring the 1920s-era historical home, the Stewart Manor House at Quail Hollow Park on July 13th and July 27th from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Unique designs, hidden spaces, and stories of the Stewart family are sure to inspire all. The house has no elevator so be prepared to take the stairs to explore all 3 floors. A fee of $5.00 per person or $20.00 per family (cash at the door) goes towards the upkeep of the home. No pre-registration is required.

 

Intro to Kayaking

Splash into the exhilarating world of kayaking on July 15th at Deer Creek Reservoir. Led by experienced instructors, this beginner class is designed for individuals eager to explore the fundamentals of kayaking. Beginning on land, participants will learn the essentials of trip planning, types of paddling equipment, and key safety practices while paddling. Then, take these newfound skills onto the water as we practice basic paddling techniques to kayak with confidence. No prior experience necessary. All necessary equipment is provided. Dress prepared to possibly get wet. Registration is required, and the fees are $15.00 for in-county and $20.00 for out-of-county residents.

 

Storytime with Stark Library

Join the Stark County District Library at Fry Family Park from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM on July 15th and explore the wonders of nature with a special storytime. This class is for birth through Pre-K. Register at Starklibrary.org. 

 

Summer Fest

Summer Fest, sponsored by Eslich Wrecking, is set for July 19th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Sippo Lake Park. Bring your family and friends to enjoy your favorite summer activities like live music, fishing, kayaking, up-close wildlife encounters, activities with Stark County District Library or by participating in a pedal boat challenge. The Berkley Fishing Team will be available to help with fishing guidance, and you can borrow fishing poles (current state fishing regulations apply). Free bait will be provided. Concessions will be available for purchase at the marina.   This drop-in event takes place at two entrances to Sippo Lake Park - East Entrance off Perry Drive and Tyner St., or West Entrance off Genoa Ave.  Please note there is no walking access from the marina to the Wildlife Conservation Center.

 

Orienteering: Canoe and Kayak

Challenge your navigation skills with a treasure-hunt-style orienteering scramble in canoes or kayaks. Beat the flotilla of competitors by amassing the most points in the 2.5-hour time limit to be decorated "Commodore of the Compass." Hosted by the Northeastern Ohio Orienteering Club, the event takes place on July 20th from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Deer Creek Reservoir. Team registration for this event is $20.00. Discovery Days: North Park (Jackson Township)

Drop by North Park in Jackson Township on July 29th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM to discover the adventures you can have with Stark Parks on the go. In partnership with Jackson Township Parks and Rec, Discovery Day is filled with free outdoor activities for the whole family, from kayak try-its, to wildlife encounters, beekeeping basics, an on-your-own nature exploration, and a scavenger hunt. North Park is located across from Jackson High School on Fulton Dr. NW, Massillon 44646. 

 

Night Bike Rides on the Towpath

Join Ernie’s Bicycle Shop for a night bike ride on July 19th from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Starting from the Lake Ave. Trailhead, riders will head out on the Sippo Valley or Towpath Trails.  This is a 14- to 18-mile beginner-friendly ride over flat terrain, with an Ernie’s team member at the front and rear of the group. Riders must wear a helmet, and bikes must be equipped with headlights and taillights. No fee or registration required to participate. Adventure Kids: Field Day

See what exciting park exploration awaits at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park on July 23rd! This is a perfect way to get the kids out of the house and into nature. Swing by the Exploration Gateway anytime between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM with your 3-9 year olds. We'll be ready to greet you with nature activities, animal encounters, crafts, and more! No registration required, but adults must stay with their kids.

 

Yoga

The hour-long yoga sessions will leave you feeling relaxed and strong. Certified yoga instructor Kim Kohler will help you challenge yourself while working at your own level in a safe and supportive environment. Modifications are offered to appeal to all skill levels. Pre-registration is required, and you will need to bring a mat. Fees are $8 for in-county and $12 for out-of-county residents. Dates include July 7th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, and 28th.
