Backyard Habitat: Saving our Streams – August 14th
Join the Stark Soil & Water Conservation District and Stark Parks from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park to learn about the threats to our streams and how to properly manage them. This presentation will introduce you to important concepts of water rights and stewardship. Stream conservation benefits our homes, communities, and wildlife! This class is a part of the Stark Parks backyard habitat certification program. The program is free but registration is required.
Beekeeping 101: Kids Edition – August 15th
Discover the exciting and unique world of honeybees, then suit up and head to the hives to get a closer look at the bees in action. Closed-toe shoes are required. Pre-registration is required due to the limited number of bee suits. Registration is only required for kids (grown-ups, no need to register). The program is for youth ages 6 – 12 and will be held at Quail Hollow Park from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Adults must stay with the kid participants. Fee is $5 for in-county residents and $7 for out-of-county.
Adventure Kids – August 28th
Join us for Creature Clues at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake. Be ready to explore outside and look for clues that wildlife may have left behind. Enjoy listening to a story and making your own animal tracks! Ages 3 – 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and ages 6 – 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Program is free but registration is required.
Fishing
Sandy and Beaver Canal Derby – August 10th
The Sandy and Beaver Canal Derby for children ages 4 - 15, will take place at the Magnolia Mill. Bait, beverages, and food will be for sale. Bring your own pole. Sponsored by Stark County Federation of Conservation Clubs, Berkley Fishing Team, and Stark Parks. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. (no pre-registration) with fishing from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Catfish with Cops – August 24th
Catfish with Cops promotes positive interactions between law enforcement and citizens while enjoying the sport of fishing. The event will be a catfish contest only. Only shoreline fishing at Sippo Lake will be permitted. A donation of $5 per person is required which supports the Stark County Park District Ranger Explorer Program. Registration will begin on-site at 5:00 p.m. All catfish must be checked in by 11:00 p.m. to be counted. Prizes will be awarded at 11:00 p.m.
Music
Traditional Music Nights at Quail Hollow Park – August 1st
Bring an instrument and join in, or enjoy listening to traditional, bluegrass, and Celtic tunes from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. $2 admission for everyone. Music Nights are held inside the Manor House on select Thursdays from June through September. No registration is required.
Summer Serenades in the Park
The Canton Symphony Orchestra and Stark Parks team up again to bring you the Summer Serenades in the Park Concert Series for its 10th year! Musicians will play from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Bring your chairs, blankets, and picnic dinner. In the event of inclement weather, this concert will be canceled. Please check for updates on the day of the concert at starkparks.com or cantonsymphony.org.

o The Canton Symphony Chorale, a subsidiary ensemble of the 100-voice Canton Symphony Chorus, will be performing before the concert starting around 6:10 p.m. The group performs a cappella choral music of all styles and compositional periods.

Discovery Day: North Park – Jackson Township – August 6th
Stark Parks is coming to a neighborhood near you! Drop by North Park in Jackson Township between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on August 6th to discover the fun you can have with Stark Parks. In partnership with Jackson Township, Discovery Day is filled with free outdoor activities for the whole family, from kayak try-its (waivers required), to live animals, hoverball archery, and more! All activities are weather-dependent.
Intro to Kayaking – August 11th
Led by experienced instructors, this beginner class is designed for individuals eager to explore the fundamentals of kayaking. Beginning on land, participants will learn the essentials of trip planning, types of paddling equipment, and key safety practices while paddling. No prior experience is necessary. All necessary equipment provided. Dress prepared to possibly get wet. Class will be held at Deer Creek Reservoir from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Fee is $15 for in-county residents and $20 for out-of-county.
Intro to Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) – August 11th
Splash into the exhilarating world of stand-up paddleboarding at Deer Creek Reservoir. Led by experienced instructors, this beginner class is designed for individuals eager to explore the fundamentals of stand-up paddleboarding. Participants will learn the essentials of trip planning, types of paddling equipment, and key safety practices while paddling. No prior experience is necessary and all necessary equipment is provided. Dress prepared to possibly get wet. The fee is $15 for in-county residents and $20 for out of county. Two classes available – 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Quail Hollow Manor House Tours – August 11th and August 25th
Enjoy a guided tour of the 100-year-old, 1920s-era, H.B. Stewart Manor House. Tours begin promptly at 2:00 PM and last approximately one hour. The building does not have an elevator so be prepared to climb the stairs. Walk-ins only. No pre-registration is required. The fee is $5 cash at the door for ages 5 and up with a maximum of $20 per family.
Pike Ridge Park Hiking Excursion – August 17th
Enjoy a glimpse of Stark Parks’ newest addition to our district, Pike Ridge Park. This guided hike will cover about 2.5 miles of this 520-acre tranquil countryside, showcasing rolling terrain, ponds, and elevated views of open grasslands. The flora, fauna, and special history will show why this land was selected to be part of our county parks system. Be prepared for uneven terrain and steep hills that are not conducive to strollers, and be sure to bring plenty of water. The park is not currently open to the public and is only accessible through guided tours. More detailed location information will be sent after you register. The hike will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Night Canoeing on the Tuscarawas River – August 17th
Join the Trailhead Canoe Livery and enjoy the Tuscarawas River by the light of the moon for a monthly night canoe event! Stark Parks’ Naturalists will be guiding the first group of paddlers. Paddle 3 miles downriver as twilight sets in, then enjoy hot dogs and s’mores around a riverside campfire. Reservations are required and must be made at least a day in advance. Call 800-226-6349 today to register (reservations not available on the Stark Parks website) – this popular event regularly sells out. Boats will launch between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. starting at the Lake Avenue Trailhead. Fee: $25 per person.

Experience the wonders of Deer Creek Reservoir at night as we paddle by moonlight from 8:00 p.m. to 10:0 p.m. This guided paddle takes you around the lake to see and hear what comes to life after the sun falls. All equipment will be provided. Please dress for the weather conditions. Fee is $15 for in-county residents and $20 for out of county.

Edible and Medicinal Plant Hike – August 20th
Join us from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discover the incredible connection we have with the natural world around us. Meet at the Quail Hollow Carriage House where there will be a short presentation followed by a hike to identify plants and their uses. Note: we will not be harvesting or consuming wild plants during this program. Please leave your furry friends behind. Registration is required.
ight Bike Rides on the Towpath – August 24th
Join Ernie’s Bicycle Shop for a free monthly guided night ride from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. This is a 14- to 18-mile beginner-friendly ride over flat terrain, with a team member at the front and rear of the group starting at the Lake Avenue Trailhead. Riders must have a helmet and bikes must be equipped with head and tail lights. Participation is free for the family-friendly event. Discovery Night and Glow Trail Challenge – August 24th
Are you looking for a fun and educational outdoor experience? Join Stark Parks for an exciting Glow Discovery evening at Fry Family Park. This drop-in event is perfect for everyone looking for a unique blend of education and adventure. The activities begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m., followed by the return of the glow trail challenge from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Activities include hoverball archery, fly-your-own kites, and nocturnal animal activity stations. Relax and enjoy the fire with s'more kits available for $1 (cash). The trail challenge involves walking or running three miles in the dark while navigating the unique topography of the park. The race check-in will start at 8:45 p.m. at the visitor's center, and you can begin the challenge any time before 9:00 p.m. This family-friendly event is open to all ages, but the trails are not conducive for strollers. The event is free, but registration for the trail challenge is $5 (cash only at the door). No pre-registration through the Stark Parks website. This event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
Yoga
The hour-long yoga sessions will leave you feeling relaxed and strong. Certified yoga instructor Kim Kohler will help you challenge yourself while working at your own level in a safe and supportive environment. Modifications are offered to appeal to all skill levels. Pre-registration is required, and you will need to bring your own mat. Fees are $8 for in-county and $12 for out-of-county residents. Dates include: August 3rd, August 5th, August 19th, August 24th, August 26th, and August 31st.
