CHARLES L. GREENE GIVEN SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD FOR NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY
Akron, Ohio– Attorney Charles L. Greene was given a Special Recognition Award by the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at their National Philanthropy Day Celebration Luncheon.
The Special Recognition Award is presented to an individual, family or group whose philanthropic contributions are “unique and impactful and whose work supporting a nonprofit organization or cause is innovative.”
Charles’ community service in the Akron area spans seven decades. Beginning in 1967 and in conjunction with the East Akron Community House, Charles created the East Akron Block Club Association, which was central to revitalizing that community.
Charles spent his professional career at Kent State University from 1970 to 2000 retiring as Emeritus Vice President and Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. For the past 34 years, Charles has been Chairperson of the Harold K. Stubbs Award Program. This endeavor has awarded more than $4 million to area students.
During his tenure at Kent State, he created the Oscar Ritchie Memorial Scholarship which was targeted to academically talented students who lacked the financial resources to go to college.
Since his retirement, he and his spouse established the Charles L. Greene Endowed Scholarship which is funded at $125,000. In 2018, Charles, along with several Kent State alums established a HBCU recruitment scholarship in honor of his mentor Dr. Milton E. Wilson, Jr.
Charles L. Greene serves as trustee of the Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation, and is also Emeritus Chairman of the Alpha Phi Alpha Foundation, succeeding the late Judge James R. Williams, the founding member of the foundation. The Foundation provides financial assistance to nonprofit organizations that serve and support the diverse community in Greater Akron.
Charles has been involved with many non-profit organizations boards in the Akron area including Direction Home Akron Canton, Urban League, United Way, Goodwill and the Magnet Task Force of the Akron Public School System.
Attorney Greene is a member of the President’s Council of Kent State University, the Circle of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh and a Charter Member of the Dean’s Club at the University of Akron’s Law School.
His dedication to service was recognized in 2023 when he received the Living Legacy Award at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Kent State’s Black Alumni Chapter.
Charles was an infantry captain in the US Army, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Sigma Pi Phi, Beta Rho Boule.
Charles is founder and Senior Partner of Davison and Greene Law Firm and, President, and founder of Tomorrow’s People consultant firm, which was founded in 1971.
He and his wife Delores have three adult children: Charles II (Colorado), Cory (Atlanta), and Keli D. Greene (Akron).
