Nature Speaker Series:
America’s Forgotten Fruit: Pawpaw – March 6th
Join us at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park from 6:30 – 7:30 PM to learn about the largest edible fruit native to North America. Scott Sandbrink, owner of the local specialty nursery Working Gardens, will speak on the unique Pawpaw Tree, its natural history, germination and cultivation. Each participant will be provided with a seed to take home to germinate. The program is free, but registration is required.
Creature Comebacks – March 20th
Join Monika Bowman Bell, Wildlife Communications Specialist with the ODNR Division of Wildlife as we explore the history of some of Ohio's most precious creatures at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park from 6:30 – 7:30 PM. Once extirpated or endangered in the state of Ohio, these wild animals have made amazing comebacks! Learn more about Bald Eagles, Bears, Bobcats, Otters, & Trumpeter Swans. The program is free, but registration is required.
Antarctica and Victoria Falls – March 27th
Stark County resident and photographer Richard Gotschall has traveled extensively with his family and has visited all seven continents. Share in his adventures to the Antarctic peninsula and a journey to swim in the Devil’s Pool at the top of Victoria Falls in Zambia. Enjoy images of wild animals, from whales to elephants! Join us at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park from 6:30 – 7:30 PM. The program is free, but registration is required.

Backyard Habitat: Intro to Backyard Habitat – March 4th
This program is just one in a series of programs to help certify your backyard as a valuable and sustainable ecosystem for wildlife. Participants will receive instructions about getting their yard the "Certified Backyard Habitat" designation by Stark Parks naturalists. The program is from 6:00 – 7:30 PM at the Exploration Gateway. Frog Watch Training – March 8th
Stark Parks is pleased to offer a unique citizen-scientist project, Frogwatch USA. As a trained volunteer, you will assist with identifying local frog and toad species in addition to identifying their various calls. You will also monitor wetlands and record data. The 2-hour training module will be held at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park and will require a frog calling identification test to complete your certification. Training from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM and is for families and/or volunteers. All materials will be provided. The training is free, but registration is required.
Adventure Kids: Home Sweet Habitats – March 19th and March 22nd
Do snakes live in Antarctica? Do foxes live in trees? Explore at the Exploration Gateway in the science lab why animals live where they live through a craft, animal encounter, and a game. We'll even create our mini habitats to take home! The program is free, but registration is required. Times are 10:00 – 11:00 AM on March 19th and 11:00 – 12:00 PM on March 22nd for ages 3 – 5 and 1:00 – 2:00 PM for ages 6 – 9.
Navigating the Night Sky – March 21st
Learn about stars, planets, and constellations with The Wilderness Center's Astronomy Club as they navigate the night sky at Deer Creek Reservoir from 8:30 – 10:30 PM. Practice using telescopes and learn how to navigate the stars during different seasons! Feel free to bring your own equipment. A Stark Parks Naturalist will be on site to lead a short lantern hike under the stars. Hikes are scheduled every half hour and will occur under cloudy or clear skies. The program is free, but registration is required.
Maple Syrup Making – March 29th
This program is a drop-in informational session on the process of maple syrup making. Join us for this sweet adventure of sap tapping, collecting, boiling, and syrup tasting. The program will be held at the Fry Family Park Visitor Center from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.
Activities
Spring Equinox Hike – March 20th
Winter is officially over, and spring is here! So, dust off your boots, and let’s celebrate by hiking around Sippo Lake Park and looking for signs of spring. Please meet at the Wildlife Conservation Center at Sippo Lake Park at 10:00 AM to get started. Hike will end at 11:30 AM and cover about 2 miles.
E-Cycle Drop Off – March 27th
Clean out old electronics like computers, phones, and TVs along with books, household items, and toys at a collection event at Sippo Lake Park from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The drive-up and drop-off style event is hosted by Summit E-Waste Recycling Solutions and Goodwill Industries of East Central, Ohio in conjunction with Stark Parks. Event will be held at the Sippo Lake Park, 5712 12th St. NW, Canton 44708.
Yoga
The hour-long yoga sessions will leave you feeling relaxed and strong. Certified yoga instructor Kim Kohler will help you challenge yourself while working at your own level in a safe and supportive environment. Modifications are offered to appeal to all skill levels. Pre-registration is required, and you will need to bring a mat. Fees are $8 for in-county and $12 for out-of-county residents. Dates include March 1st, 3rd, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 24th, and 31st.
