Fishing Events

 

Richard Fry Memorial Derby

The Richard Fry Memorial Derby is free for children aged 4 - 15 and takes place at the Magnolia Flouring Mills in Magnolia on August 9th. Beverages and food will be available for purchase. Bring your own pole. Long-time partners and supporters, Stark County Federation of Conservation Clubs and Berkley Fishing Team, along with a sponsorship from Fishermans Central, help present the 2025 fishing derbies for kids. Free bait provided by JWS Bait. Registration begins at 7:30 AM with fishing from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Beekeeping 101: Kids Edition

Get ready to dive into the amazing world of bees on August 15th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Quail Hollow Park. We'll explore how to take care of a hive and check out the cool tools beekeepers use to keep bees happy and healthy. Kids will get to suit up like real beekeepers and safely see the bees in action at our live hive. Please wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes for the hive visit. The program is for ages 8-12 years old, and registration is required.  The fee is $5.00 for in-county and $7.00 for out-of-county residents.

 

Avian Adventure

Bring your binoculars and join a Stark Parks naturalist on the trails at Fry Family Park on August 23rd from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM to look for local bird species and enjoy some fresh air. Whether you're a seasoned birder or just curious, all skill levels are welcome. The program is free, but registration is required. 

 

Edible and Medicinal Plant Hike

Do you know which weed in your yard can remove and soothe a bee sting in seconds? Or which common plant could relieve your cough if made into an herbal tea? Join us at Quail Hollow Park on August 27th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM to discover the incredible connection we have with the natural world around us. Note: We will not be harvesting or consuming wild plants during this program. Please leave your furry friends behind.  Registration is required but the program is free.

Summer Serenades in the Park

The Summer Serenades Concert in the Park are supported by The Mary Renkert Wendling Foundation, Friends of Stark Parks, and Rotary Clubs of Stark County. August dates include August 7th at Minerva Municipal Park, August 21st at Canton Garden Center, and August 28th at Tam O’Shanter Park. Concerts are on Thursday evenings from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM.   

 

Activities

Nimishillen Creek Paddle

Take in the sights of the Canton South area as we paddle 8 miles on the beautiful Nimishillen Creek on August 2nd from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This is a high-mileage, strenuous paddle, and prior paddling experience is preferred. Bring plenty of food and water, we will be stopping for a quick lunch break. All paddling equipment will be provided. Dress for the weather and wear closed-toe footwear. Meeting location and trip details will be provided upon registration. A weather event or poor water levels could cause trip cancellation. The fee is $20 for in-county and $25 for out-of-county participants. 

 

Magnolia Mills Open House

Tour the historic 1834 Magnolia Flouring Mills on August 3rd, a must-see on the National Register of Historic Places. Explore indoor and outdoor areas, with access to the first level. Drop in anytime from noon to 3:00 PM. 

 

Ranger Walks

Join law enforcement rangers for a one-mile guided walk at Walborn Reservoir Marina on August 6th from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Rangers will share how they protect wildlife and visitors, and the importance of conservation. The program is free, but registration is required at StarkParks.com. 

 

Magnolia Mills Tours

Hand-hewn beams. Vintage machinery. Canal history. Tour the historic Magnolia Flouring Mill, built in 1834. This iconic structure in Magnolia is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a must-see. This tour features both indoor (first level only) and outdoor sights. The tours take place during the Magnolia Canal Days Festival. Tours are free, and registration is not required. Drop in anytime on August 8th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM or August 9th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. 

 

Stewart Manor House Tour

Journey back in time while touring the 1920s-era historical home, the Stewart Manor House at Quail Hollow Park on August 10th and August 24th from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Unique designs, hidden spaces, and stories of the Stewart family are sure to inspire all. The house has no elevator so be prepared to take the stairs to explore all 3 floors. A fee of $5.00 per person or $20.00 per family (cash at the door) goes towards the upkeep of the home. No pre-registration is required.

 

Discovery Days: Veterans Park (Plain Township)

Drop by Veterans Park in Plain Township on August 12th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM to discover the adventures you can have with Stark Parks on the go. In partnership with Plain Township, Discovery Day is filled with free outdoor activities for the whole family, from kayak try-its, to wildlife encounters, beekeeping basics, an on-your-own nature exploration, and a scavenger hunt.

 

Night Bike Rides on the Towpath

Join Ernie’s Bicycle Shop for a night bike ride on August 16th from 8:15 PM to 10:15 PM. Starting from the Lake Ave. Trailhead, riders will head out on the Sippo Valley or Towpath Trails.  This is a 14- to 18-mile beginner-friendly ride over flat terrain, with an Ernie’s team member at the front and rear of the group. Riders must wear a helmet, and bikes must be equipped with headlights and taillights. No fee or registration required to participate. Intro to Kayaking

Splash into the exhilarating world of kayaking on August 19th from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Deer Creek Reservoir. Led by experienced instructors, this beginner class is designed for individuals eager to explore the fundamentals of kayaking. Beginning on land, participants will learn the essentials of trip planning, types of paddling equipment, and key safety practices while paddling. Then, take these newfound skills onto the water as we practice basic paddling techniques to kayak with confidence. No prior experience necessary. All necessary equipment is provided. Dress prepared to possibly get wet. Registration is required, and the fees are $15.00 for in-county and $20.00 for out-of-county residents.

 

Stand Up Paddleboard

This beginner class at Deer Creek Reservoir on August 19th is designed for individuals eager to explore the fundamentals of Stand Up Paddleboarding from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Beginning on land, participants will learn the essentials of trip planning, types of paddling equipment, and key safety practices while paddling. Then, take these newfound skills onto the water as we practice basic paddling techniques to paddleboard with confidence. No prior experience necessary. All necessary equipment is provided. Dress prepared to possibly get wet. Pre-registration is required.  Fees are $15.00 for in-county and $20.00 for out-of-county.

 

Bigfoot Trail Challenge and Adventures

Get ready for a unique outdoor adventure at Fry Family Park on August 23rd from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM with the Bigfoot Trail Challenge. This exciting 5K course is packed with surprises and activities inspired by the legendary creature itself. Along the trail, you’ll encounter various Bigfoot-themed challenges designed to test your skills. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to enjoy a fun day outdoors, this family-friendly challenge is an adventure you won’t want to miss! Don't forget to wear your best trail gear, bring your friends, and get ready to run, walk, or jog your way through the course. Doors open at 10:30 AM., and you can start the challenge anytime between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM. This event is open to all ages. The trails are not conducive to strollers.  Registration is available at StarkParks.com, and the event is free. 

 

Orienteering

Challenge your land navigation skills with a treasure-hunt-style scramble through Quail Hollow Park on August 24th from 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM.  Hosted by the Northeastern Ohio Orienteering Club, the goal is to get the most points in 90 minutes. Bring a whistle and a compass. Map fee: $15.00 preregister or pay by cash/check at event. Yoga

The hour-long yoga sessions will leave you feeling relaxed and strong. Certified yoga instructor Kim Kohler will help you challenge yourself while working at your own level in a safe and supportive environment. Modifications are offered to appeal to all skill levels. Pre-registration is required, and you will need to bring a mat. Fees are $8 for in-county and $12 for out-of-county residents. Dates include August 4th, 9th, 11th, 18th, 23rd, 25th and 30th
